Ever since the original netbook, the Asus Eee PC 701, debuted way back in 2007, netbooks have been flying off shelves at a rate of knots. Despite this success, however, the only notable hardware innovation has been nVidia's scarcely utilised ION chipset.

Even from afar, you can see that the Z600 is a stylish machine. The purple-maroon cover has a soft touch finish, and is set off by angular chrome accents that bracket the battery. While it’s just 0.6 inches thin, it also has a very large footprint at 15.6 x 11.6 inches, similar to the Acer Aspire Timeline 5810T.

Like other notebook manufacturers, Toshiba has updated its netbook to incorporate Intel’s new Pine Trail CPU, the Atom N450. In doing so, it also refreshed the design of its stylish netbook, now called the mini NB305, making the chassis sleeker and more refined.

Until recently, affordable consumer laptops were a compromise: either you got a small laptop (i.e. with a screen of 13in or less) with good battery life, or a big one (15.6in and up) with merely decent battery life at best.

In the past year or two, we’ve seen a number of vendors redouble their efforts to reach small businesses with low-cost, feature-filled notebooks. HP already made a huge splash earlier in the year with its ProBook 4510s and 5310m, the latter being our favorite small business system of 2009.

The HP Mini 311 looks like an obvious evolution of the HP Mini design. In fact, if it weren't for the larger size of the 311 you could easily mistake this netbook for the old Mini 1000. In short, nothing substantial has changed in terms of the build or design of the latest generation of Mini netbooks. That said, this isn't a bad thing.

Plenty of manufacturers offer their laptops in a range of colours, but Sony has been at it for longer than most. One can trace this all the way back to the C Series in February 2007, which was replaced by the CR Series in August that year and then the CS Series last year.

ASUS has created a version of its popular UL30 thin-and-light featuring discrete graphics. The UL30Vt is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor which can be overclocked up to 33%. Discrete graphics come in the form of an Nvidia GeForce G210M 512MB, and is switchable to the integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD.

Lenovo new SL510 won't surprise anyone who has used a ThinkPad before--it's an excellent laptop that's oriented entirely toward no-nonsense use.The matte black housing, the iconic nub in the middle of the keyboard, and the deep-set keypad are all comfortingly familiar, as are its black, boxy looks, with the familiar "ThinkPad" logo on the top of the case's corner.
