First Penryn Laptop Performance Tests

Intel's launch of its first batch of mobile Penryn processors (five in all) at CES 2008 earlier this month was somewhat muted by all the craziness at the show. Perhaps Intel purposely launched them in this setting to downplay the fact that this was just another Centrino launch—limited strictly to processors, however advanced they might be. At least when the Penryn's predecessor, the Merom, launched, it came with an entirely new environment: a graphics subsystem, a faster front-side bus (FSB), a new memory controller, and a new wireless chipset in what was called the Santa Rosa platform.

But with this new batch of processors, laptop makers are merely swapping in the newer ones without actually revamping the innards. But let's not take anything away from the new Intel Core 2 Duos. They come in a smaller, 45-nm package than the previous, 65-nm Merom processors. They also share more L2 cache (in the 3MB-to-6MB range) between the dual cores that are built into each processor.
