| Caring for your Laptop |
Generally, laptops are much more expensive than their desktop counterparts, are more susceptible to damage, and are significantly more expensive to repair. Since having an appropriate operating system (Windows, Linux, etc.) and adequate power protection are integral in ensuring your laptop remains a viable investment, I am sure my regular readers will indulge me when I emphasise their importance once again. As long as you are running Microsoft Windows XP, I recommend that your laptop have at least a 500MHz processor (Intel or AMD), 256MB memory (RAM) and a 10GB hard drive. For anything less, I recommend you run Windows 98 or Linux. While XP would run on lower specifications of course, it would put some strain on your processor, memory and hard drive causing them to fail earlier. You should also bear in mind that most laptops come with integrated graphic adapters (as do low-end desktops such as the Dell 2400 or 3000) and running graphic intensive software such as the latest games (Doom, Need for Speed, etc.) or the newest versions of design software (AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, etc.) may also harm your computer system.
