| Apple prepping new AirPort card for Mac Pros |
Apple's just-announced Mac Pro features a new AirPort wireless networking card that will seemingly be distinguished from its AirPort and AirPort Extreme predecessors by a new moniker: AirPort Express. Not to be confused with Apple's diminutive music-streaming base station, service source documents reveal the AirPort Express card will be powered by Broadcom's BCM4311 chip, a "a high-performance 802.11a/g baseband processor with an integrated media access controller," according to Broadcom's Web site.
Apple's MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Intel-based iMac all feature AirPort cards powered by Atheros chipsets. Those products are still referred to as being equipped with "AirPort Extreme" cards, although they differ from Apple's AirPort Extreme card for PowerPC systems. Like the Atheros cards, however, the Broadcom card in the Mac Pro connects to two antennas, suggesting Apple may be planning to support the 802.11a protocol in the near future.
